"A study of megalithic monuments in Sarnena Sredna Gora"
Research project under Decree № 3 of MES
The study presents newly discovered megalithic monuments in the territory of Sarnena Sredna Gora documented by a team of IRCHH during the research project "Study of megalithic monuments in Sarnena Sredna Gora", financed by Decree № 3 of MES.
Until now, these megaliths were not reported. At the beginning of XIX century Georgi Bonchev mentioned that in this region there are dolmen. In 2015 "Spisanie 8" there was an expedition under the guidance of prof. Valeria Fol, which documented the largest known at the time dolmen in the Balkans. With the implementation of this project scientific team from SULSIT was the first documented megalithic monuments Sarnena Sredna Gora, some of which are now unknown species. This is a great success not only for the University but also for science, because until 2015 it was assumed that megalithic monuments in Bulgaria are only on the territory of Strandzha Mountain, Sakar Mountain and Eastern Rhodopes.
Megaliths are global problems as they occur throughout the world and are the subject of cultural tourism in Bulgaria and abroad. Bulgaria hosted the Second International Conference "Megalithic monuments and religious practices" (October 12-15,2016) where they presented new monuments in the territory of Bulgaria. At this prestigious international forum, which brought together leading experts from around the world.SULSIT team presented two reports from field and theoretical research and constructed an interactive map of megaliths in the municipality of Brezovo.
On November 18, 2016 in the municipality in the town Brezovo was opened an exhibition presenting the results of the project "A study of megalithic monuments in Sarnena Sredna Gora". The same day Prof. Valeria Folwas held a lecture in school in the town. Photos from the opening of the exhibition and the lecture can be seen here.
